Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia

Well after just getting back from reading all types of hunting and fishing blogs, I just read one post of a young fisherman talking about the new deadly fish virus spreading across all types of waters.

The DNR has already found it in the Great Lakes near me. The name of the disease is called Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia, I can’t even pronounce the name of the virus so you know it can’t be good right off of the bat. In the Chicago Tribune writers were saying the gobies were hit first and washed a shore, that was the first sign.

I just wonder what the cause of it is and if any company or agency is working on cure for it. This could really screw up the whole eco system in all the lakes in the U.S. DNR has been urging all ice fisherman and spring fisherman from moving live fish off the water. They have concluded that the virus is more active in cold water areas of the lakes.

I posted some pictures to see what kind of affect it has on the fish, as you can see the a bunch of fish washed up on the shore and a Muskie with red spots near the tail, kind of hard to see. And a up close shot of another fish, it’s really devastating this had to happen during the hard times of the economy.

This is a serious subject requiring thought and planning.

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the USDA is running a photo contest to promote fish health.

There is less than 2 weeks left in the contest.
