Vernon Pond Off Limits

Beautiful Brook Trout

For all ice fishermen in Vermont, just a heads up that Vernon Hatchery Pond will be off limits for ice fishing effective January 1st, 2011.

The close off is to protect small brook trout, also known as salvelinus fontinalis.
While the Vernon pond is the only body water currently on the list, the Wildlife Department says there will be several other regional lakes and reservoirs affected by the new regulations.

Brook trout, the only native trout to much of the east coast, are the only game fish in the mentioned ponds.

This change is part of a larger joint venture between state wildlife services and non-governmental agencies to protect the remaining population of the species.
