Rubber Fishing Nets

Rubber fishing nets thing of the past?

So what’s with the rubber fishing nets, are they the thing of the past now?

I remember back in the 90s when they were very popular, now it seems like most the fishing stores in my area don’t carry them anymore. Back in the day my Dad had one on his Starcraft fishing boat, that’s until he spun the boat around with the net on top and it fell into the water, then it sank to the bottom never to be seen again.

Overall I thought it was a good fishing net, pretty wide and the rubber prevented any hooks from being stuck in the netting. Only thing the rubber net lacked was depth, these rubber nets were suppose to expand, but I don’t think they did that very well. Even when we caught a big fish and netted it, the rubber netting did not stretch as much as we expected it too. I mean just imagine if we ever caught a huge muskie back in the day, we would over never been able to net it with a fishing net like this.

Nowadays I keep a regular nylon net on board, the fishing net is huge. It’s long in length, very wide and has depth to it. So when I catch a monster muskie, I won’t have to worry about getting the whole fish in the net. I bet a few fisherman lost big fish due to the rubber fishing net not having depth. It’s a very important feature to have on a fishing net! Without it, it’s very easy for the fish to slip out of the net.
