Rainbow Trout State Record

Nevada's New State Record Rainbow Trout

Many fishermen will tell you that you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to catch a fish, well how about a state record.

That’s what it took to break a 39 year old state record! Rocket Scientist Mike Mott caught this 16 pound 8 ounce rainbow trout on February 10th at Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada.

Mott’s huge rainbow trout beat Mike Soskin’s previous rainbow trout record that weighed 16 pounds 4 ounces. But Soskin’s rainbow trout was longer, it measured 31 1/2 inches long while Mott’s rainbow trout measured 30 1/2 inches long.

It’s interesting how the larger fish is sometimes shorter in length than the smaller fish, that’s nature for ya!

I always considered rainbow trout to be one of the most gorgeous fish to live in freshwater. The colors and designs on the fish are an artistic masterpiece.

The fishing lure Mike Mott caught this magnificent fish on was a stonefly nymph. “At first I thought I had a snag, but once I started stripping in the line I knew it was going to be fun.”
