Sometimes the world record fish isn’t caught, but found!
This monstrous Chinook Salmons was found dead in a shallow stream by biologist Doug Killam during a salmon survey after the fish recently spawned in Battle Creek, California.
Doug Killam has seen thousands of salmon in his career as a biologist, but this one takes the cake as the largest one he’s seen all his life.
Believe or not, dead carcasses are used in surveys to calculate how many number of salmon are spawning in each stream.
These monitoring surveys provide detailed information on the number of salmon returning to specific areas, baseline information for establishing sport and recreational fishing seasons, evaluating hatchery programs, and evaluating habitat restoration and improvement projects. So if you ever find a dead record size fish, it’s always good to report it to the DNR.
