Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas, shitter was full!

I want to wish all hunters and fishermen a Merry Christmas, kind of late I know, but I’ve been pretty busy with other projects lately.

Plus it’s kind of out of season for me (meaning fishing), so I haven’t had much to write about lately. Tis the season for ice fishing though, everyone’s sharpening their auger blades and dusting their ice shanties off. I used to be a pretty big ice fisherman back in the day when I was young kid, since then, I really haven’t looked forward to going back out into the cold.

I was never fond of sitting on a slab of ice and freezing my bunions off. What made ice fishing fun is the thrill of catching the fish and trying to reel him through an eight inch hole. It was a bit of a challenge! It was also fun running across the ice and doing a baseball slide into a tip-up after the flag went up, yelling “fish on!” Come on, you know what I’m talking about! Little things like that made ice fishing exciting!

As I got older, I’ve kind of lost interest with certain hobbies, especially when they are unsafe. With ice fishing I’ve been a little worried about falling through the ice. If you’re smart about it, for instance calling the fishing reports and see how thick the ice is, chances are you’ll stay safe. But still, you never know… Then there was the freaky stress cracks you’d hear as you crossed the ice. It was a very strange eerie feeling, I never got used to that.

My type of ice fishing shanty! Wilcraft ice shanty floats, drives across treacherous ice, climbs snow banks and can be transformed into a tent on wheels.

This is not to say I wont ever go out again, I wouldn’t mind going out one of these days in the future. But, when I do, this time around I definitely want to have a heater and a nice size ice shanty. Really makes ice fishing more enjoyable if you ask me. Never again will I be one of those fisherman sitting on a bucket, feeling the coldness of a brisk wind. No matter how thick of gloves or jacket you wear, you still feel that chill all the way through your body.

Just try to stay safe out there ice fisherman and have a happy holidays. I’ll definitely have to get some interesting articles up in the meantime, liven things up at Sportmans Habitat!
