Largemouth Bass: Detroit River

Young Largemouth Bass caught on Berkley Powerbait

Well, it seems that fishing is still pretty poor in Lake St. Clair, nothing’s picked up.

Still only catching around 1-3 largemouth bass a day. I got out today around 4pm, not a real good time of day to be fishing, but I figured I might get a few bass and maybe a muskie or pike.

Well after fishing for four hours, between my friend and I, we only caught one largemouth bass.

And it was a very young largemouth bass, didn’t have much size to it. But it’s a lot better than being skunked, right? I caught the bass on a purple Berkley Powerbait worm.

I caught the largemouth bass right in 8-10 feet of water, a place that is usually stocked with a good amount of smallmouth bass.

It’s obvious that the lake is still fairly warm for smallmouth bass fishing, but I’m still waiting for the temperatures to drop and the fish to start feeding. We’re getting there, but we’re not quite there yet.

Delphine Channel Marker

I tried trolling near the Delphine channel, figured I’d hook a muskie or a northern pike, but still nothing.

One thing is for sure, the fish aren’t biting on crankbaits at all. I’ve been trolling and casting them the whole month of September and haven’t caught one bass. Jig fishing and spinnerbait fishing is where it’s at, I’m sure live bait has been working too, but I’ve never been a live bait fisherman.

After trolling the Delphine channel, I thought I’d also try fishing the Detroit River. So we headed down the river trolling two Bomber crankbaits, getting my hopes up we might catch a walleye or smallmouth bass. Well as the sun started to fade away, the day was turning into night and we were getting hungry. So we called it quits and headed back, ordering up a Hungry Howie’s pizza. Even though we were pretty bummed with fishing today, we still got to see some pretty scenery on the way back. Seeing a sunset on Lake St. Clair is quite beautiful!
