Hooked a Small Muskie

Small Muskie caught in Lake St. Clair

Well I got out on the lake a few days ago, expecting to pick up a few smallies, I only ended up catching one small muskie.

But it was still a beautiful day of fishing, it was a west wind and the temperature was still in the 60s. Even in the middle of October the smallmouth bass are still being stingy.

I fished the same spot I did last time where I caught that big 4 pound smallmouth bass, right near the Delphine channel. I was looking for the bait fish like last time, chances are where the minnows are lurking, the big fish aren’t much far behind.

I finally came across the spot where the bait fish were hiding out and I did some casting for an hour, that’s where I hooked the Muskie. But this was no ordinary catch, when I was reeling up my crankbait I noticed the Muskie followed it right up. By the time I noticed the fish, I had already had my crankbait out of the water.

Since I could still see the Muskie, I took another cast right near it. The muskie reacted a little bit but did not bite.

I thought about doing the figure eight, instead I took another cast near it and did the stop and go retrieve. Ended up working flawlessly, the Muskie bit within a heart beat.

That was the story of the day, other than that fishing was lousy. I only went out fishing for 2 1/2 hours, so you really can’t expect much. And I only stayed around the spot where I caught the smallmouth earlier in the month. I bet if I changed up spots, I would of caught more fish. But we had to pick up our daughter from school so the fishing expedition was over, there’s always next time!
