Die off of Smallmouth Bass

Around the end of spring time this year there was a large die off of smallmouth bass.

The DNR biologists claim it was a typical die off smallmouth due to a common fish bacterial pathogen that usually causes death when infected fish are stressed.

But, some fisherman are skeptic, some believe it is the largemouth bass virus that hit a large portion of inland lakes. I for one think it could possibly be due to pollution.

I’ve been living near Lake St. Clair all my life, heard lots about high PCB levels in the canals and large pollution in the Milk River due to the waste water treatment plant. I’m not a scientist, so my suggestion is just a theory.

I just hope I’ll be able to fish Lake St. Clair when I’m older, I’ve been thinking that the lake in 10 to 20 years might not be fishable due to pollution. I really hope that’s not the case!.
