Dave Kober Michigan Woodcarver

Michigan woodcarver Dave Kober

When it comes to ice fishing in the winter, many Michiganders seek out a woodcarver named Dave Kober.

A legendary artist out of northern Michigan who carves fish decoys for luring in big muskie and pike when ice fishing and spear fishing.

His fish decoys are heavily detailed from the head of the fish all the way down to the caudal fin.

Dave Kober has made a family business out of the fish woodcarving, as his son now makes decoys as well.

But at the age of 72, Dave Kober still stays strong with carving these fish decoys. And that’s not to say these masterpieces can’t be used as decorative piece on the wall in your family room, bedroom, or tavern.
Many fisherman has decided to do that!

But, if you’re expecting these fish woodcarvings to be cheap, you’re surely mistaken. Each decoy will sell for $150 to $200!

If you want a 10 foot fish woodcarving like a muskie or northern pike, that will hit four figures. Each year Dave Kober makes about 200 of these beautiful fish each year.

Kober has even decided to expand his business and carve frogs as well.

Even though Dave Kober has retired back in the late 50s, he still enjoys work, carving these fish gives him sort of a solidarity out of life.

Sometimes, he admits, even he is surprised at what he can do with blades and paint. As much as he tries to stay out of cold water, that’s one thing he has in common with the fish.
