Biggest Muskie of the Year

Checkout this big muskellunge my girlfriend reeled in today, she caught it on a Bomber Model 8A crankbait.

The muskie put up a pretty decent fight, I couldn’t believe my girlfriend was able to real in this monster on 8 pound line.

At first she screamed “I’m going to lose it,” I just gave her some assertion and said “no you won’t, just real it in carefully and use your drag!

” When the muskie got near the boat it decided to take off very quickly, the drag let out and my girlfriend got scared. But she kept her rot tip up and fought the fish with caution.

The muskie finally calmed down and I was able to net him.

Soon as we got the big muskellunge in the boat it started to do some belly rolls, he wiped a ton of slime all over the boat and scuffed up my hand as well. This is what fishing is all about though, I love it! I felt so good for my girlfriend, so far she’s caught the largest muskie and smallmouth bass for the whole year. We would of measured the muskie and weighed him, but I like to just get a few photos of the fish and try to put him the back in the water quick as possible. Muskie take a long time to recuperate compared to other fish. I end up venting the muskie’s lungs for a few minutes, then let him go, hopefully then the muskellunge goes back to the depths.

I too ended up catching a Muskie today, but it was a baby one.  I caught it on a Bomber crankbait as well, this baby muskie was caught while trolling on the Detroit river.

I’ve been kind of disappointed, every time we go over on the Detroit river we don’t catch anything.  This is actually the only fish we caught over there.

At least it’s a good sign that Muskie are breeding in the river.  As for the big muskellunge, my girlfriend caught that bad boy casting over near the Delphine Channel. And if you missed it up top in the first paragraph, she was using a Bomber Model 8A crankbait.

Other than those two fish, we didn’t catch anything else. We got out late fishing so it was kind of expected, we arrived on the lake at 3pm. It would of been nice to catch a smallie or two, but I guess they weren’t hungry. Maybe next time we’re out we’ll get a few smallmouth bass.
