Big One that got Away

Everyone has a story about a big one that got away, well this is my story and boy was it a doozy.

I arrived at this Harbor around 5:00pm or so, not the greatest I know. But, I really wanted to fish, I was so bored at home.

The day before I just respooled my spinning reel with fireline, because I just bought a fireline rod. Not sure if they still make this kind of line, but at the time it was the strongest braided line. So I took a few casts with a new lure I was also using, Berkley Powerbait crawdad. Not sure what kind of fish I was going to catch, but I wanted to try something different.

So on my fourth cast or so, I let it sit on the bottom a few seconds, then all of a sudden I started to see my line move towards. It was just a little bit, because at first I thought I was seeing things because I didn’t feel anything hit the bait. So I kind of shrugged it off and kept jigging the bait and reeling it in. Then all of a sudden the line started coming towards me, I saw a big swoop in the water like something big made the water move. I mean this must of been a huge fish in order to do that, especially when I was fishing in 10 feet deep of water or so. I mean I was jigging the lure on the bottom for Christ sake!

So my line was really starting to come towards me in a hurry, I didn’t even have much of a time to feel the pole bend. Then the fish got to where I was standing and it swooped underneath the deck, by this time my pole did bend and my drag was going ape shit! I tried tightening the drag up, but that didn’t help at all. The fish just kept on going, my pole was bent so bad I felt like this mutha was going to take me in the water with it. Then snap! I was like what in the hell, I never ever felt so much tension on my rod before, it felt like I was hauling in a Shark. More like the shark was hauling in me. I was so pissed, I was thinking like Fireline doesn’t suppose to break, what in the hell. My Dad was there with me and he couldn’t believe it.

This is my guess on what kind of fish this could of been: Huge Catfish, huge carp, huge sturgeon, or maybe even a Muskie. Because I’ve heard of Muskie doing that sort of thing, they’re kind of stationary then take the bait like crazy. But, I really don’t think it was that because it didn’t surface at all. I presume it was a Cat or Carp, I guess only God knows!

It still was a great time and made me look forward to some more great times out on the water.
