This was my second hunting season as a teenager, at this time we found a new hunting spot out in Rochester, Michigan. Our in-laws granted us permission to use there property for hunting purposes which we were very enthused about. The reasons we were so enthused about this new spot was because we found two big rubs in the field, the trees were massive and the rubs were bare to the bone of the tree, I had seen nothing like it.
The hunting areas we were used to had very simple rubs on small little trees, nothing like this. Well along with finding the two rubs we scouted the area and looked for a few hunting spots on the ground. The field was wide open, kind of like one big square with four points. At one time I think it was a corn field, just like the one next to it. We didn’t have time to put up tree stands because we wanted to get out there soon as possible. It was already into bow season and we were very excited.
The first afternoon hunt I took the spot closest to the house and my brother took the other side of the field, we basically wanted to cover both sides of the field. That day we saw a ton of deer, about thirty to fourty deer, all does and no bucks. This happened for about three weekends straight, we were stunned not to see one dam buck. We thought to ourselves all these does, there must be at least one huge buck in the area or even a few young ones. They must be really hiding out.
We never gave up! Until one day where I was out there with my brother again, I took the closest side to the house again and my brother was way across the field. We were out there all afternoon, saw a few does, the usual. Until I heard some racket behind me. Remind you I was sitting down right against a thick tree so they couldn’t see my silhouette against the sky or anything else. I heard this racket for about one hour, sounded like a bunch of does running back and fourth.
So I thought to myself something has them spooked, so I got off of my wood chair and rested my bow on my legs, read to lift if something popped up in front of me. Well, some more time passed by and I thought that these deer were never going to come out behind me. All of a sudden it got quiet, it was almost dark by now and I was ready to call it quits.
All of a sudden I heard these big thumps in the ground and start to see an outline of a deer marching out right in front of me. I thought it was just a doe at first then I saw its huge rack. I was absolutely stunned by its magnificence, I’m like is this thing real. It was about twenty feet from me! I knew there were deer behind me moving around, but nothing this close to me. I didn’t even see it next to me at all, until it marched out right in front of my area.
I was just so stunned, so I got my shit together.
I’m like, I got to raise my bow and pull it back before this buck leaves. I started to raise it really slowly, remind you the buck was about twenty feet in front of me and was perfectly turned sideways for a heart shot. It wasn’t looking at me, but it could easily see me from it’s eye point of view. I had no choice though, I had to raise my bow and get things going before it left.
Right when I was going to pull my string back, about two to three does flew out of the same path right next to where he came out and darted across the field near my brother and what do you know the buck darted off after them. I knew I blew it, but then I thought why not try calling him back with the grunt call.
I started to grunt by the time he got all the way across the field, he wasn’t near my brother, just to the right of him so he couldn’t see it. He did see the buck dart across the field though. I stopped the deer dead in its tracks before he darted into the thick forest. He turned around and picked his head up to look at me, try to decipher if I was another buck in its area.
I don’t think the buck saw anything so he ended up taking off, man was I bummed. Believe me I never heard the last of it from my brother. It was fun seeing the enormous buck though, I have never seen a deer or rack that size to this day, it was massive. It was about a ten point and had a perfect typical rack. All the points were rounded and had a white shiny look to it, like it’s been the one rubbing against the trees we found.
Some might think of it as a hunting failure and would never live it down. After a few months I just never thought that again, I was just so glad to see a monster buck like him. It was a great outdoor experience!
