Best Ice Fishing Higgins Lake

Ice Fishing Higgins Lake

Michigan lakes are known to produce some monster smallmouth bass and musky for its summer months, but for winter how does the state rack up?

Well pretty darn good to say the least. There are many lakes in Michigan that provide you with a great ice fishing expedition, but there’s one lake that I think is best of the best, Higgins Lake!

Why you might ask? Well because Higgins Lake produces some of the best jumbo perch an ice fisherman could ever ask for. It’s not uncommon for ice fishermen to reach the 50 perch limit at the lake.

And in the shallows you can find rainbow trout and brown trout lurking around, which also make for a great meal.

Some of the best ice fishing lures to try out on the perch are spikes, wax worms, minnows, and wigglers.

Most fisherman have success with those lures, but don’t be afraid to try the Rapala Jigging Shad Rap and other lures in your tackle box.

The Shad Rap has always been my lure of choice when I’m out ice fishing.

You’ll never go empty handed after a day of ice fishing on Higgins Lake.

Although if you’re looking to reach that 50 perch limit, January and February is said to be the best! I know I said previously in an article that February can be a rough month for ice fishermen, but remember not every lake works the same.

There’s some lakes in Michigan that produce some great fish in the month of February, Higgins Lake is one of them.

As deep as Higgins lake is, around 130 feet, it can take sometime for the lake to be sufficiently frozen.

So I must warn any fishermen looking to take on the lake, make sure you check the fishing reports first. And remember to test the ice every few yards by poking a hole in it. You can never be too safe ice fishing out on a lake.

So if you’re ever in the area of Roscommon County in Michigan, give Higgins Lake a try.

It’s also good for spring, summer, and fall fishing as well. Higgins Lake is truly a magnificent lake to have in Michigan, us Michiganders are quite lucky to have it!
