Berkley Gulp Overrated

I don’t know about you, but I find Berkley Gulp to be so overrated. I fell into the sales pitch after seeing some of the pros use it on their fishing shows.

Berkley does have a good background and their fishing lures are known to produce, especially their Powerbait Grub. But, this stuff just plain sucks!!!

Thumbs Down for Berkley Gulp

I’ve tried it in many lakes and ponds in Michigan. It just doesn’t produce like their commercials and the fishing pros said it would.

The plus side is they are biodegradable, but since they aren’t the standard soft plastic material, they have lost a lot of motion to them.

After a few times of use in the water they become really stiff. The only luck I had with them was on crappie in a small pond in Rochester, Michigan.

That’s really it! At the time the crappie were hitting on anything I tossed in the water.

That’s pretty horrible out of all the times I used them last year, I tried Gulp on every lake I fished: Lakeville Lake, Lake St. Clair, Lake Orion, Stony Creek, and Kent Lake. The bass did not want to touch it.

It really makes me wonder what type of fish Berkley tested this scent on? The stuff really stinks like piss and when you get the stuff on your hands it’s very grimy and hard to get off.

I even tried out their new Gulp Alive recharging bucket, boy does that suck even more. The top doesn’t even seal properly. So if you keep this small bucket in the bottom of your tackle box, the liquid can leak and get on other lures.

You would think that would be a good thing since it suppose to be a pleasing scent for fish, but that’s not the case. And if you ever decide to leave this stuff in your car, man this is the worst thing you could ever do.

It can roll around and leak all over your seats and floor mats, leaving an impeccable stench in your car. It didn’t happen to me, but I’ve heard horror stories from other fishermen.

So to me, it’s not worth trying the stuff ever again. Just like many fishermen who have complained about it on fishing forums, I have also had a bad experience with Gulp. I don’t want to complain too much about the bait because Berkely does make some great fishing products.

I love their fishing line Trilene XT, their other Powerbait scented lures, and also their Berkley Flicker Shad.

It amazes me Berkley decided to put this bait on the market, maybe it works for some fishermen in certain areas of the world.
