Bear Attack in Emmet County, MI

Grizzly Bear Growl

Lately I’ve been referring to a lot of old articles on Sportsmans Habitat.

It’s not that I can’t find anything else to write about, it’s just some of these topics are far more extensive then I thought they would be.

For instance remember the article I wrote about bear attacks, talking about one of the episodes in the TV show MonsterQuest. Well, another bear attack just happened in Michigan, luckily the hunter was able to get away without any life inflicting wounds.

But this latest breaking news, you probably heard from your local TV channel, really justifies MonsterQuest’s own point how bears are starting to domesticate and become unscared of humans. Even I thought when I was watching the episode, MonsterQuest was kind of exaggerating about bear attacks. After I heard 21 year old Chad Fortune’s story, it definitely shows that us hunters and other people who live in the wildlife habitat should be more aware of the Bear situation.

Random bear attack, not related to story. "Look with your own discretion."

The story goes, Chad Fortune was sitting up in his tree stand bow hunting for deer right before dusk, when all of a sudden out of nowhere two bears appeared. He said he first saw two crossing in front of him from about 20 to 25 feet away. Then another pair, including the largest, appeared. They first seem uinterested in him, until they pick up on his scent when they crossed his path he takes to his tree stand. Fortune assumed they came out of swamp, but he wasn’t positive. Two out of the four bears began to approach him, Fortune shouted at them trying to scare them off, it didn’t seem to work.

Remind you his tree stand is only 15 feet off the ground, when one bear began to climb up the 8-inch diameter popple to which his stand was attached. Fortune didn’t have time to stand, he dropped his bow and just started flailing at the animal from a seated position, landing six to eight blows until the bear fell to the ground. He scrambled to his feet and then a second animal had mounted an assault, Fortune was prepared again as he tagged the bear with a good kick as the blow precipitated the bear’s descent.

Fortune was not attached a third time, but it took sometime to get the other bears to disappear as he kept yelling at them. Night time grew and about two hours later, his girlfriend and father arrived. Fortune thinks the other two bears might have left as his girlfriend and father was walking toward him, but he wasn’t sure. The battle was over and it was time to go to the hospital. In the end he needed a little surgery and 40 stitches to repair a gash in his leg.

Chad Fortune called it a draw, but If I were him I would just be glad I was alive. He reported everything to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment officials.

But afterwards they changed the story around saying the attack might have been caused by the smell of fried food clinging to his clothing from a family picnic earlier in the day. Fortune was very annoyed by this, he stated he had totally different clothes on when he was hunting for deer up in his tree stand. And all of us hunters know, having scent free camouflage clothes is a must when hunting for deer. This is rather a very stupid thing to say coming from the DNR I would say, it was obvious they were trying to embellish the story. The DNR also went to say it may have been an instance of a sow bear protecting her young. But Fortune said there was nothing childlike about any of the bears.

It’s definitely one of the craziest bear attacks I ever heard of, luckily no one was killed in the incident.
